Getting the Best Price on Computer Hardware for Your Small

Get the best price on computer hardware and technology for your small business, big-box retailers part one.

One of the most demanding services my company, My IT Department, provides for our clients is to get computers,

servers and other technology related purchases for much less than my clients pay for. Since we only service on Long

Island New York I wanted to write a few tips to help people who are not in our service area get the better

prices. There are many different options for small business owners to buy hardware. The option we will address in

this section of the series is large box retailers like Best Buy, Staples, etc. Large box retailers can be either the most

expensive or one of the cheapest options for businesses to buy through for three main reasons. Firstly, they are

affordable and designed for home users, from a retail perspective household users are usually less frugal with their

technology purchases and more interested in “bells and whistles”. That is to say, a large box retailer puts more fancy

stuff in the computer or fancy mouse and can charge a lot more now because home users are buying the “experience”

not a tool for business. Second, retailers advertise a pretty big box. Someone has to pay for those ads, you are a

person. Thirdly they have to pay for retail space, employees, shrinkage, security, insurance, etc. Once again one has to

pay for expenses. So how can a small business owner maximize its purchasing power with large box retailers?

First, make sure you have a business account with the retailer, not a personal account. If you don’t have a dedicated

sales representative, don’t have a real business account (no matter what they say). You need a dedicated sales

purchases to whichever retailer you decide on. That includes office supplies, furniture, anything at all, including

things you can’t find on their Web site. The more you buy the more the company’s automation programs will give

you. (Spoiler alert) The retailer would love to have you as a customer, but at what you do as a small business they will

do nothing to keep you a customer as it will not affect the retailer’s bottom line. However, attracting your sales rep

will affect your business and while most of them do not work on commission, most of them receive incentives

(bonuses, trips, vacation days, etc) to get better performance. In addition, every business management manager I have

ever worked with has quotas that need to be filled for the quarter. If you can make up a small percentage of your

matches all the others. If you are making a large purchase (over $ 250 for one item) then check circuit city and

Compusa (still online), Target, Walmart, Kmart, Officemax, etc. Once you have a model number from the website of

the retailer you are using a simple copy and paste it into the online store search for each retailer. The search can be

found on the home page of each store. If you can find a lower price, call your sales representative and tell them which

store is lower. It will match or beat the price. Once you do it a few times you should be able to search all the major stores

in less than 5 minutes. CONSTRUCTION: Most companies have their product code for goods that are internally

any of the other retailers’ sites. Fourth, make sure you are friendly with your sales rep. They will be your “insider” and

have access to the deals that the public does not. (Spoiler alert) A few times a month a representative from a tech

company will come to the retailer’s headquarters and allow them to sell a small number of products very cheaply or

with lots of incentives. Another much longer article would be needed to see why they do that. Representatives also

often have access to exclusion and abduction found in the warehouse or at the end of their model life. But these are

only offered to certain customers and the representatives must a
